Event Info

Battle in the Saddle is proud to partner with the National Reined Cow Horse Association in presenting the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout. The individual winner of the event will earn a free entry into the 2013 NRCHA World’s Greatest Horseman competition in San Angelo, Texas!

At the World's Greatest Horseman Shootout, there will be two competitors from the following associations:

  • American Quarter Horse Association
  • American Rope Horse Futurity Association
  • Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association
  • National Cutting Horse Association
  • National Reined Cow Horse Association

Fees, to be paid by the sponsoring organization, are per horse/rider combination:

  • Entry Fee - $250

To be eligible, the rider cannot have earned more than $5,000 with the NRCHA and cannot have been a previous winner of the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout.

Each rider will compete with one horse and one bridle for the duration of the competition.  Per NRCHA rules, the bridle must include:
1. A spade bit or a bit having the following characteristics: one with an unbroken bar mouthpiece with one inch or higher port measured from the bottom of the bar to the top of the port. There must be an operable cricket (roller) incorporated within the mouthpiece of the bit. A barrel made of copper or metal, wrapped around the bar of the mouthpiece of the bit is to be considered a part of the mouthpiece. The barrel must be round, smooth, and made of one continuous, unbroken piece.  
2. A leather curb strap at least 1/2 inch wide.
3. A bit hobble
4. A romal rein except for steer stopping where a roping rein may be used.

All competition will be in the Jim Norick with the schedule as follows:

  • Herd Work - following the $50,000 amateur cutting finals on July 5
  • Steer Stopping - following amateur heeling on July 6
  • Reined Work - following the amateur working cow horse on July 8
  • Fence Work - following the NRCHA open/AQHA senior working cow horse on July 8

There will be two types of competition in the World's Greatest Horseman Shootout: individual and team competition. Individual Competition and Team Competition.

The individual winner will be the rider who accumulates the most points in the four portions of the event.  An exclusively designed plaque will be presented to the exhibitor’s nominating association for the period of one year.  

The World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout Champion will be presented with a custom designed 100x cowboy hat from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery.
